Toronto, ON – July 22, 2025 — Internationally acclaimed jazz trumpeter and composer Mike Field is proud to announce the release of his fifth studio album, Nashland—a vivid, high-energy collection of original tunes inspired by Field’s adventures around the world and brought to life by his electrifying quintet.
Self-produced and arranged entirely by Field, Nashland strips jazz back to its roots: five top-tier musicians playing with passion, groove, and spontaneity. After three albums featuring extended instrumentation, Field set out to capture the unmistakable chemistry and energy his quintet brings to the stage—no frills, no overdubs, just pure ensemble interplay.
"I wanted this album to sound like the band feels when we’re playing live," says Field. “Every song tells a story, and I wanted that storytelling to come through with the kind of spark we get when it’s just the five of us on stage, feeding off each other.”
The result is a bold and cinematic sonic journey that takes listeners from the winding trails of Hungary (Mud Dance) to the alleyways of Little Havana (Chicken, Cigars and Leche), from impulsive detours in Italy (Pepino and the Engineer, Dark Age Detour) to chaotic roads in the Dominican Republic (Traffic Police). The moody and reflective Ballad of Chet Baker is a tribute to one of Field’s jazz heroes, while the album’s opening track, Bad Lessons—released as a single in November 2024—sets the tone with swagger and sting, born from a real-life encounter with a particularly difficult trumpet instructor.
With Nashland, Mike Field reaffirms his place as one of Canada’s most distinctive jazz voices—infusing each composition with rhythm, storytelling, and a joyfully unorthodox spirit.
